In May 1998, the Ven. Master Jy Din Shakya, then Abbot of the Hsu Yun temple in Honolulu, Hawaii, organized a dedication ceremony for Hong Fa temple in Shen Zhen, South China, in which 500 monks received full ordination. He invited prominent Zen teachers from around China to give instruction throughout the long and elaborate four-week ceremony. These masters included Fo Yuen Shakya, Ben Huan Shakya and Sou Ye Shakya, shown above. It was during this ceremony that the abbacy of the Zen Buddhist Order of Hsu Yun, founded by Master Jy Din the previous year, was confirmed upon Chuan Zhi Shakya by 10 Masters, a traditional requirement in Chinese Buddhism.
In the book commemorating the event, Master Jy Din wrote " . . . after the Buddha died there was much debate over what to do after his death and how to interpret his teachings and the rules of monastic practice. Eventually the teachings reached China during the Tang Dynasty and became Zen. The original teachings were debated and became different schools as people wrote down different teachings." He continued, emphasizing that, "Because Zen is the teaching of direct experience, rather than debatable interpretation of history, it is important to spread Zen as the only direct Buddhist teaching. It is essential to be committed to the practice: Do not just follow the precepts because they are rules, but understand the meaning behind them and understand why they were established in the first place." It is with Master Jy Din's intent, as he established ZBOHY in the name of his master, Hsu Yun, that the order focus on the core teachings of the Buddha - teachings that rely on no 'isms, but on direct experience itself. No words, pictures, or methods will, by themselves, take a devotee into the realm of Buddha Mind - only our personal character combined with strong, sincere desire can do it - with the right conditions working together, there is no other option for us than to contemplate the nature of our lives, to seek out the nature of suffering, and of existance itself.
Since Master Jy Din's passing on March 13, 2003, the order continues under the spiritual guidance of Fa Hui (right) and Chuan Zhi (below).
